Read below for more information about each outlet type.

GFCI Outlets

Ground fault circuit interrupter is GFCI. When electricity comes out of an outlet it follows the shortest path to the ground, which is usually the ground. Ground faults can be caused by faulty wiring or water near an outlet.

A GFCI monitors the electrical currents and turns off any circuit that detects an imbalance. This is to protect you against electrical hazards. A hairdryer dropped in a water bath will cause the electricity to fault and flow through the water. This will be detected by the GFCI outlet and it will stop power from flowing to the device. The outlet has a reset button that restores electricity and a test button that ensures the outlet is functional.

To keep children safe, GFCI can also be tamper-resistant. These receptacles feature spring-loaded shutters which close the slots or contact openings. The springs contract when you insert a plug. When the shutters are opened, the prongs can make contact with the springs and create an electric circuit. These spaces are required to be plugged into GFCI outlets: bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, garages, wetbars, spa and pool areas, and utility rooms.

AFCI stands to arc fault circuit interrupters. They protect against electrical dangers via heat arcing. This is different from the GFCI. Arcing can cause high-intensity heat that can ignite surrounding materials like insulation or wood framing over time. These electrical fires can be prevented by AFCI outlets. You can also use the test button to check AFCI outlets. The outlet will trip when you press the “TEST” button. The outlet should make a clicking sound when it trips.

AFCI protection protects you against a range of dangerous situations such as rodents chewing on wires, nail driving through wires, and overheating. If the AFCI outlet appears to have tripped, you can test it with any device to verify that there is power. To turn the outlet on again, push the “RESET” button located at the outlet. The circuit breaker may have an AFCI reset if there is not a button on the outlet. 2020 edition of NEC(r) requires AFCI protection for all 120-volt, single phase branch circuits supplying outlets and devices.

AFCI outlets can be found in: kitchens, living rooms, diving rooms, parlors, libraries, bedrooms, closets, hallways, dens, or sunrooms.

EV Outlets

Do you drive an electric vehicle (EV). A top-quality electric car charger is essential for your home. A 240 volt NEMA14-50 outlet is the best option for home charging Tesla vehicles. This outlet can also be used to charge electric stoves or recreational vehicles.

Mister Sparky continues to be asked for more EV charging station installations. We can install EV charging stations in your garage, next to the charger location, or run a circuit if you need it.

USB Outlets

USB outlets are a highly convenient addition to any modern household. With the increasing number of electronic devices that we rely on for both work and entertainment, having easy access to charging ports has become an essential aspect of daily life. USB outlets eliminate the need for bulky chargers and adapters, making it easy to charge smartphones, tablets, and other USB-powered devices directly from the wall. They are also versatile and can accommodate a range of USB connector types, making them suitable for a variety of devices. Installing USB outlets in your home not only simplifies charging but also reduces clutter and frees up valuable space. Overall, the convenience and practicality of USB outlets make them a highly beneficial addition to any home. USB outlets are a great alternative to plugging in a USB adapter to an outlet. Mobile devices require constant charging. A USB outlet with at least two outlets and a few USB ports is the best option.

Smart Outlets

Smart outlets, also known as Wi-Fi-enabled outlets, are a beneficial addition to any home. These outlets allow users to remotely control and automate their electronic devices, making it easier to manage energy usage and increase home security. With a smart outlet, users can schedule when their devices turn on or off, or control them from anywhere using a smartphone app. This not only saves energy and reduces electricity bills, but also adds convenience and peace of mind. For example, homeowners can remotely turn on lights or appliances to make it look like someone is home, even when they’re away, which can help deter burglars. Overall, smart outlets offer a simple yet effective way to enhance a home’s functionality and make everyday life easier.

Dryer Outlets

Three-slot dryer outlets are most likely to have the neutral and ground wires grouped together, creating the potential for shock. It has two hot wires and one wire that contains both ground and neutral. All new homes must have a four-prong dryer outlet. We wire these dryer outlets with a 120/240-volt circuit. The 120-volt service powers the dryer’s sensors and timers. The 240-volt service provides power for the heating elements.
